The manuscript for this composition reveals that the piece was definitely also conceived as a piano solo. This version differs significantly from the published final version, with orchestra (Op. 22), especially at the end. And, when the published edition first appeared, the piano part included cues obviously stating that it could also serve as a solo piano piece (without orchestra).

** This work was published in Mendelssohn's lifetime (1843 as Op. 55) but with a piano reduction (created by Mendelssohn) instead of orchestra. However, the first performance (in 1841) was with full orchestra, and it was never Mendelssohn's intention that it be performed with piano instead of orchestra. The piano version was created for rehearsal/study purposes only, which is why it is not given its own listing. The work with orchestral parts was not published until after Mendelssohn's death. The version for piano has been published various times, inclduing by Btkpf and Peters.
*** The timings for this work do not include the spoken dialogue between the movements. The given estimate of 65-70 min. for a total run time of this work with dialogue between movements of is calculated based on a 'reasonable' amount of dialogue to be included in a concert version of this work.
**** The actual number of necessary vocal soloists can be determined for each individual performance based on how strict one wishes to adhear to Mendelssohn's instructions. Other than B1, the other two bass roles are specifically indicated to come out of Chorus 1 and Chorus 2 resepctively.And if one wishes to be extremely literal with Mendelssohn's indications, a case can be made that the two solo quartets (in Mvts 4 & 6) utilize a 4th bass soloist (or even a 5th), raising the total number of bass soloists necessary for this work from 3 to 4 (or even to 5).
***** The number of necessary actors given as '6' is based on the number of different roles identified in Mendelssohn's manuscript. Depending on the personal taste for a performance, that number can change. It can also be performed with as few as one male and one female actor - both performing multiple roles. It is also significant to mention that one of the spoken roles (Der Chorführer) is the same role as the B1 soloist.
