New York and Germany Branches
The Mendelssohn Project is comprised of two separate organizations – one in the United States, and one in Germany.

They each have a separate Board of Directors, although there is some overlap of membership in order to maintain a singular mission, to facilitate a seamless coordination of activities, and to work in tandem for their common purpose. Stephen Somary is founder and artistic director of both companies.

As outlined elsewhere in this website, Somary began building his research teams in 1997 and informally called their work The Mendelssohn Project. However, formal companies were not established until some years later. In 2003, the first organization was created in Stuttgart, Germany (The Mendelssohn Project e.V.). One year later, in 2004, a 501(c)(3) organization was approved in New York State (The Mendelssohn Project, Inc.).

In order to avoid any confusion, both organizations represent themselves through a single website, and the distinguishing characteristics of each separate organization are kept internal. Both The Mendelssohn Project, Inc. and The Mendelssohn Project, e.V. have the primary objective of promoting a comprehensive and clear understanding of the music and life of Felix Mendelssohn.
